The Report Sheds Light on Data Loss Prevention Challenges and Identifies the Use Cases for Integrated DLP vs. Enterprise DLP Solutions.

A recent report published by Gartner titled “How to Choose Between Enterprise DLP and Integrated DLP Approaches” (Gartner subscription required) found that “the data loss prevention market includes products with DLP capabilities integrated in security products or SaaS applications, as well as cohesive enterprise DLP suites. Security and risk management leaders should use data security governance to make choices among the DLP technology approaches.” Teramind has been named as an Example EPP Vendor within the report.

The report further states, “security and risk management leaders, IT leaders and business unit leaders often overlook the value of effective collaboration when designing controls for sensitive data, resulting in inconsistent data protection.” To us, this conclusion is unsurprising. At Teramind, we often see customer confusion and misunderstanding when it comes to choosing the right solution for a company’s specific use case.

The information security landscape is expansive, and there are a plethora of products in many categories, including employee monitoring, user behavior analytics (UEBA), PAM, SIEM, and of course, DLPs. Each of these categories comes with its own caveats. For instance, there are divisions between integrated DLP vs. enterprise DLP. While many large organizations prefer a dedicated enterprise DLP, integrated DLP, such as Teramind DLP, often provides some unique advantages, such as email security, digital rights management (EDRM), and the option to deploy on the cloud for a fraction of the price of an enterprise DLP.

Gartner also pointed out that “integrated DLP is commonly available as part of EPP (endpoint protection product).” We believe this makes it particularly attractive to companies looking to add extra data protection capabilities to their primary defensive tools, like employee monitoring, insider threat prevention, and productivity tracking. For example, many companies want the ability to detect app and web activities and to take action when sensitive files are being shared outside the company’s domain, clipboard copy/paste from the CRM to an Excel file, using removable media, and other types of behavioral anomalies such as printing an abnormal amount of files or uploading files to personal cloud storage.

Case in Point: Teramind DLP has all of these features and more.

In addition to these features, Teramind DLP also comes with several unique features that are usually found in more expensive enterprise DLPs, including:

  • A machine learning-based policy and rules engine with hundreds of pre-built rules. This not only automates the implementation process but also reduces the number of false positives.
  • Content discovery and classification for Personally Identifiable Information (PII), Personal Health Information (PHI), Personal Financial Information (PFI), and custom data types.
  • “On the fly” content discovery with advanced OCR and natural language processing (NLP).
  • Fingerprinting and tagging to identify important documents and files and then monitor their movements.
  • Built-in support for compliance and standards like GDPR, HIPAA, PCI DSS, ISO 27001, etc.

While some companies’ project requirements and complex use cases might justify investing in an expensive enterprise DLP solution, for many organizations, those solutions are overkill. Instead, they can adopt an endpoint-based DLP solution to cater to most of their data security needs.

According to Gartner

“The perception that enterprise DLP products are suitable for every organization often causes IT leaders to make unnecessary expenditures on overly complex products, when they may already have adequate capabilities in products they own.”

This is where, we believe, Teramind stands out as an EPP vendor. Teramind DLP provides the best return on investment for organizations of any size. It is designed to assist SMBs, enterprises, and the public sector to address data loss, cybersecurity, and insider threats – all in an integrated suite.

Teramind DLP is available on the cloud, private cloud, or on-premise deployment and can be licensed with a monthly or annual subscription.
